Poker Intellectual Component

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Athletic games, intellectual games and gambling.
Athletic games: the idea of the game, where the final result (victory or defeat) is achieved largely at the expense of athletic qualities of the competitors.

Intellectual games: the idea of the game, where the final result (victory or defeat) is achieved largely at the expense of intellectual qualities of the competitors.

The relativity of these definitions is obvious. Athletic games (boxing, football or any other type) surely contain intellectual component. In every type of games we have to think. The majority of famous athletes today prefer to keep their personal athletic diaries where they describe in every detail all of their competition and training matters.

Standing apart from others is the third type of games: gambling and casino games.
The definition of gambling and casino games based on the idea of the game, where the final result (victory or defeat) is achieved by chance. In such kinds of games the athletic or intellectual or any others qualities of the competitors are not principal. Believe it or not but according to this classification poker belongs to the second category, intellectual games. Let’s turn to the more detailed review of the latter.

Intellectual games. Games with almost perfect information and games with inexact information.

Games with almost perfect information: the idea of the game where all the game information (the position, the players’ actions) is fully open to all participants of the game.

To tell the truth there is restricted information even in that kind of games. That is: every player has its own idea of the game action and these thoughts as a rule are unknown to others. Chess is the most striking example of intellectual games with almost perfect information.

Games with inexact information: the idea of the game, where the part of information is mutually hidden from all its participants. The information type can be different. For example in backgammon the game position and players’ actions are fully open, however, the result of future dice toss is unknown to all of participants. In turn, in poker the scope of hidden information is bigger: the unknown information is not only the future coming out of cards from a pack but also the cards of each participant because they are hidden from the rest participants of the game.

As an example for a game with almost perfect information we will examine chess, as this game is probably well-known to our readers. As an example of games with inexact information we will study poker.

Blackjack Strategy

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Perhaps the most important thing to bear in mind is that what matters is not just your card value but also the dealer’s shown card.  Winning is all about assessing your hand against the dealer’s potential hand. Because the dealer has to hit on sixteen or stand on seventeen you can use this to plan out your strategy. The higher the dealer’s shown card the stronger his hand is and the more trouble your are in.

Here is a quick list of possible cards showing in the dealer’s hand and what they mean for you:

Ace: Big trouble. This round is going to be the dealer’s unless you have spectacular luck.

10 or face card: Bad news for you. The dealer is in a strong position.

9 : Things aren’t looking good. The dealer has got the upper hand here.

7 or 8: Loosen up a bit, you can beat the dealer on this round if you play things right.

4 to 6: The dealer has got that sinking feeling. This hand looks like it will be yours.

2 to 3: Be careful. It could go either way, so play cautious.

Always draw a card if your total is less than 11 because there is no danger of you busting. As a general rule you should always stand if your hand is 17 or higher. If you are on 13 to 16 only draw a card if the dealer is showing 7 or better.
If you hand totals 12 you should take a hit unless the dealer is showing 4 to 6. In this case the dealer may very well bust so you should sit tight and wait for that to happen.

Aztec’s Treasure

Monday, January 25th, 2010

With Aztec’s Treasure you can have fun or really go for the big jackpot. There are 20 lines on this progressive slot machine. Before spinning, you can select how many lines to play-as low as one line. If you’re not going to play all 20 lines, which is the machine’s default position, you need to know that you must play them in sequential order.

So, if you wanted to play just three lines, you’d be playing line one, two and three. You can’t do them out of order, like four, six and eight. There are ten lines on each side of the machine. To give you an example, line one is in the 6th position on the left, while line two is on the second position on the left. Line three is on the 9th position on the left and so on. All numbers 10 and under are on the left, while all numbers 11-20 are on the right.

Aztec’s Treasure has the following betting denominations: 1 cent, 2 cents, nickel, quarter, 50 cents, one dollar and five dollars. So, you can bet up to $100 per spin if you want.

This progressive slot machine also has an auto play feature. While I don’t consider this fun, you might. Just put your money in, click on auto play and kick back until you want to stop. The game will keep playing until you run out of money or you stop it. I can just imagine clicking this feature with $500 in the machine, getting a phone call, forgetting about the machine and coming back to see $0.

Aztec’s Treasure has multiple bonuses throughout the game. The Aztec King shows up on Reels 2, 3 and 4. He’s like a wild symbol. Except for Idols, he substitutes as any symbol. The Idols appear here and there.

The Jackpot is random and it can be won at the end of each spin. It doesn’t matter what denomination you are playing either. It’s a nice little twist. If you’re looking for huge jackpots ($50,000+), this isn’t your slot machine. But, if you want the ability to pick up $1,000 or so at the end of any spin, Aztec’s Treasure will be a great time for you.

Blackjack: Counting Cards

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Card counting in blackjack is used to determine when the player has an advantage over the house. This is done by tracking the ratio of high cards to low cards, with more high cards being the desired outcome.blackjack

Because the objective of blackjack is to get as close as possible to 21, more high cards in the deck means a greater chance of the dealer busting or the player getting a natural. It should be noted, however, that card counting in blackjack is a precise art which requires many hours of practice.

Values usually take the form of +1, -1 or 0. In the Hi Lo system, any card which ranges from 2 to 6 is counted as +1. Cards 7 through 9 are zero, and tens through aces are -1. Each time the card counter sees a card, he adds or subtracts a number based on this information.

When the current count is positive, the player will want to increase their bet.

When the count is negative, the player will want to lower their bet.

If, on the other hand, the resulting count is greater or less than zero, then the blackjack counting system is said to be not sure.

More advanced blackjack counting systems also exist, and these may assign values such as +2 or -2 to cards in the deck. While many believe that these advanced systems improve the accuracy of card counting.

The game starts with each player putting up a bet and then receiving two cards and the dealer also receives two cards, all of the players’ cards are face up, and the dealer exposes only one card.

Cards worth 10 and aces worth one or 11. If your two cards don’t add up to a number that you think can beat the dealer based on his exposed card, you can hit and get an additional card.
Once it is the dealer’s turn to act, he turns over his other card. If the dealer busts, everyone who has not already busted wins. If he does not, he pays even money to players who have a higher point total than he does.

In a live casino, dealers will not act until you give them a hand signal.

How To Play Poker

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

The object of poker is to survive the rounds of betting and have the best hand out of all players. Let’s go over the wining hands of poker: pkr

  • Royal Flush –  Actually, this is the rarest of all poker hands to be dealt. A royal flush consists of an ace, king, queen, jack, and ten, all of the same suit.
  • Straight Flush –  A straight flush is five cards all in numerical order of the same suit. Example: two, three, four, five, and six of clubs.
  • Four of A Kind – Four of the same cards, plus any other card. If another player also has four of a kind, the player with the highest value of their four of a kind wins.
  • Full House –  A full house consists of a set of three of the same numbered cards, plus a set of two the same numbered cards. Example: three kings and two queens.
  • Flush – A flush is any numerical sequence of cards that are all the same suit. The cards don’t have to be in numerical order, they just have to be the same suit, whether it’s five hearts, five clubs, five spades, or five diamonds.
  • Straight – A straight is a five card sequence in numerical order. The five cards do not have to be the same suit.
  • Three of a Kind – Three cards that are the same number, plus two other random cards. The higher of the two three of a kind hands wins. Example: three fives would beat three fours.
  • Two Pair – Two pair is a five card hand that consists of two sets of pairs plus another random card. Example: two sixes, two fives, and a king. The two fives and two sixes are your two of a kind. If another opponent is holding two pairs, then your fifth card determines who wins the hand the higher of the two random cards wins.
  • One Pair – One pair consists of two of your cards in your hand being the same, plus three other random cards.
  • High Card – In a high card hand, the only thing that can win the pot for you is if your high card beats the other players high card.
  • When playing a game of poker, before the cards are dealt, each player needs to put in what is called an ante. This bet can be anything from a nickel to hundreds of dollars. Poker players usually set limits as to what the ante is, and how high the bets can go.
  • The dealer then deals the cards out to each player, making sure each player has five cards. Each player looks at their own cards without showing them to anyone else at the table.
  • The first player to the left of the dealer has the option to open the pot,  or they can check, which means they don’t want to make the first bet, but they don’t want to fold their cards . In the case of checking, the option of betting would go to the next player. After the pot is opened, continuous bets are then placed. Once the first round of bets are done, players have the option of getting rid of up to three cards. Another round of betting follows with the same rules as above.
  • The hand of poker is done when no one any longer wants to raise the bets or everyone but one player has folded. The cards in each players hand is turned over for everyone to see, and the highest hand wins all that money in the pot.
